Understanding Vasculitis

One of the most challenging conditions I treat as a rheumatologist is vasculitis. Vasculitis is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammation of the blood vessels. This can lead to thickened vessel walls, restricted blood flow, and potential tissue damage. This condition can affect a single organ such as the skin or multiple organ systems within the body.

At Concierge Rheumatology, we specialize in comprehensive, cutting-edge treatments to manage vasculitis, reduce inflammation, and prevent long-term complications.

Symptoms of Vasculitis

Symptoms of vasculitis vary based on the blood vessels and organs affected but commonly include:

Fever and fatigue

Weight loss
Skin rashes, red spots, or open sores

Numbness, tingling, or weakness in the hands and feet

Joint pain and stiffness

Shortness of breath and coughing up blood

If left untreated, vasculitis can cause severe complications such as aneurysms, organ failure, or permanent vision loss.

Causes & Risk Factors

Vasculitis occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks blood vessels, leading to inflammation and damage. While the exact cause is unknown, several factors may contribute to its development including infections, underlying autoimmune diseases such as lupus, and drug/medication use.

Diagnosing Vasculitis

A rigorous evaluation by our specialists at Concierge Rheumatology ensures an accurate diagnosis. Our approach includes obtaining a thorough medical history and physical exam. We also utilize blood tests such as inflammation markers (ESR and CRP) and imaging tests such as CT scans. In some cases, a biopsy of the affected organ (i.e. skin) may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.

Personalized Treatment Options at Concierge Rheumatology

Although vasculitis has no known cure, treatment focuses on reducing inflammation, managing symptoms, and preventing complications. The aim is to keep the vasculitis in remission. Our expert team provides personalized treatment plans, which may include corticosteroids initially as well as other immunosuppressive therapies such as Azathioprine. In some cases, biologic therapies such as Rituximab may be needed.
