Understanding Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)

Lupus, also known as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), is an autoimmune disease. This means that your body’s immune system, which normally protects you from illness, mistakenly attacks healthy tissues. It can affect many parts of your body, including your skin, joints, kidneys, heart, and lungs.

Common symptoms include:

Recurrent low grade fevers
Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling
Butterfly-shaped rash on the face
Skin lesions that worsen with sun exposure
Dry eyes and mouth
Recurrent shortness of breath and chest pain
Raynaud’s phenomenon – fingers and toes turning white or blue in response to cold or stress

Diagnosing Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Diagnosing lupus isn’t always straightforward. The symptoms can mimic many other conditions, and there is no single test for confirmation. Instead, I use a combination of steps, such as assessing your medical history, physical exam and blood tests to help make an accurate diagnosis. In some cases, such as symptoms involving the skin or kidneys, you may need a biopsy. Examining these tissues under a microscope can provide important clues.

Personalized Treatment Options at Concierge Rheumatology

While there is no cure for lupus, early diagnosis and targeted treatments can significantly improve patient outcomes. I prefer to minimize the use of corticosteroids, and instead rely on DMARDs and biologic medications for maintenance. I also discuss the measures such as diet, sleep and physical exercise to help maximize your health.
