Understanding Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis is a condition I often see in my practice. It is a chronic autoimmune disease that causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness, along with dry, thick patches of skin known as psoriasis. Psoriatic arthritis can also affect other organs such as the eye. At Concierge Rheumatology, we believe that early diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing long-term joint damage and disability.

Symptoms of Psoriatic Arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis symptoms vary from mild to severe and can affect one or multiple joints. In addition to psoriasis skin rashes, symptoms include:
Joint pain, stiffness, and swelling (often in the hands, feet, knees, and spine)
Sausage-like swelling in fingers and toes (dactylitis)
Nail changes, including pitting, ridges, or separation from the nail bed
Lower back pain
Eye inflammation (uveitis), causing pain, redness, and vision changes

Diagnosing Psoriatic Arthritis

Early diagnosis is crucial to preventing permanent joint damage. Common diagnostic tools include a detailed medical history and physical exam, blood testing to rule out other autoimmune conditions, and imaging such as X rays to assess for joint damage.

Personalized Treatment Options at Concierge Rheumatology

Although there is no cure for psoriatic arthritis, treatment can slow disease progression and improve joint function. At Concierge Rheumatology, we utilize therapies such as DMARDs (i.e. Methotrexate), biologic therapies (i.e. Humira), and targeted synthetic DMARDs (i.e. Xeljanz) to manage psoriatic arthritis. In addition, we focus on exercise and movement therapy to help manage your symptoms.
