Understanding a Positive ANA Test

What is an ANA Test?

As a rheumatologist, one of the most common referrals I receive is for a positive ANA test. This result can cause a lot of concern and anxiety. Even for other healthcare providers, interpreting an ANA test can be difficult. It’s important to know that a positive ANA is not diagnostic by itself. What If I Don’t Have Symptoms Right Now?

Not everyone with a positive ANA test will go on to develop a serious autoimmune disease. In fact, some people with a positive test may never develop any significant symptoms or health issues. The key is monitoring for changes.

Taking Control of Your Health

If, based on your symptoms and laboratory findings, I believe you may have one of the conditions mentioned above, I will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan. This may involve  the use of medications such as DMARDs (Disease-Modifying Antirheumatic Drugs) or biologics  but depends on the individual disease. This may also include modifying lifestyle factors such as diet, sleep and an exercise regimen.

A positive ANA test can be a starting point for understanding your health better. Whether it leads to an autoimmune diagnosis or rules one out, our team at Concierge Rheumatology is here to provide expert guidance and compassionate care.

Schedule a consultation today to discuss your ANA test results and take the next step toward clarity and wellness.
