The exact cause of polymyalgia rheumatica remains unknown, but it is believed to be linked to immune system dysfunction. Genetic factors may also play a role in increasing susceptibility to the condition. It most commonly affects individuals over age 50, with peak onset between 70-80 years old and primarily affects individuals of Northern European descent.
Polymyalgia rheumatica is closely associated with giant cell arteritis (GCA), a condition that causes inflammation of the blood vessels. Symptoms of GCA include severe headaches, jaw pain, scalp tenderness, and vision disturbances. If untreated, GCA can lead to blindness or stroke.
Although polymyalgia rheumatica has no cure, effective treatments can alleviate symptoms and improve daily function. Our tailored approach includes corticosteroids and in some cases the use of maintenance therapies such as Methotrexate or biologics. We also help patients with developing a personalized exercise program to maintain mobility and muscle strength.
Polymyalgia rheumatica can be effectively managed with the right treatment plan. At Concierge Rheumatology, we are committed to providing expert care tailored to your unique needs.
