Understanding Osteopenia

Osteopenia is a condition characterized by lower-than-normal bone density. While not as severe as osteoporosis, osteopenia can eventually progress into osteoporosis.  Reduced bone density increases the risk of fractures, especially in the hips, spine, and wrists.

At Concierge Rheumatology, we specialize in early detection and personalized treatment plans designed to slow bone density loss, maintain bone strength, and reduce the risk of future fractures.

Symptoms of Osteopenia

Osteopenia is often referred to as a "silent disease" because it typically does not present noticeable symptoms. However, signs that may indicate reduced bone density include fractures from minor accidents or falls, gradual loss of height over time or bone pain.

Causes & Risk Factors

Osteopenia can result from a variety of factors. The most common causes include aging and hormonal changes. Other factors that increase the risk of developing osteopenia include smoking, long-term use of corticosteroids, and sedentary lifestyle.

Diagnosing Osteopenia

Evidence of osteopenia may be found incidentally on imaging tests such as X rays. Our diagnostic approach may include a Bone Density Test (DEXA scan) which is a formal test that can identify the degree of osteopenia. We may check laboratory tests such as calcium and Vitamin D. Also, when osteopenia is found, it is important to evaluate for secondary causes such as hypothyroidism.

Personalized Treatment Options at Concierge Rheumatology

Our approach to treating osteopenia is comprehensive, aiming to slow bone loss, prevent fractures, and improve bone strength. Treatment options include nutritional support such as calcium and Vitamin D supplements, weight bearing exercises and balance and flexibility exercises. If osteoporosis develops, we offer medical therapies such as oral bisphosphonates.

Take Control of Your Bone Health

Osteopenia doesn’t have to progress to osteoporosis. With early detection and a personalized treatment plan, you can maintain bone health and reduce the risk of fractures.
