Understanding Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine and sacroiliac joints, leading to pain, stiffness, and potential fusion of the vertebrae. Over time, AS can cause reduced spinal mobility and lead to impaired movement.

At Concierge Rheumatology, we specialize in personalized biologic treatments and holistic approaches to manage ankylosing spondylitis, reduce inflammation, and improve mobility.

Symptoms of Ankylosing Spondylitis

AS symptoms can develop gradually and may vary in severity. Common symptoms include:
Chronic lower back pain and stiffness, especially in the morning or after inactivity
Reduced spinal flexibility and a hunched-forward posture
Breathing difficulties due to chest rigidity
Pain and stiffness in the hips, shoulders, or other large joints
Eye inflammation (uveitis), causing redness, pain, and blurred vision

Causes & Risk Factors

The exact cause of AS is unknown, but genetics (i.e. the HLA-B27 gene) and environmental factors play a role. In addition, ankylosing spondylitis can be associated with other diseases that share this genetic marker, including Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, and psoriatic arthritis.

Diagnosing Ankylosing Spondylitis

Early diagnosis is crucial to prevent complications and manage symptoms effectively. Our diagnostic approach includes obtaining a detailed medical history and physical exam to assess posture and spinal flexibility. In addition, X-rays and MRIs help detect spinal inflammation and structural changes. Lab testing such as C-reactive protein can also be helpful.

Personalized Treatment Options at Concierge Rheumatology

While there is no cure for AS, effective treatment can help manage symptoms, slow progression, and improve mobility. Our specialized treatments include NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) as well as  biologic therapies such as TNF inhibitors (i.e. Humira) and IL-17 inhibitors (i.e. Cosentyx). In addition, we help provide personal interventions such as spine stretching exercises and physical therapy to improve joint flexibility and manage daily stiffness.
